Gundam Wing Fic Contest Announcement
Aug. 4th, 2004 12:45 amI will be adding the contest to my website within the next day or two.
Contest Purpose:
To encourage and inspire authors of good but incomplete multi-part Gundam Wing stories to complete those stories.
Contest Rules and Requirements
1. The nomination period begins on August 1, 2004 and ends October 31, 2004. Accepted stories must be completed by March 31, 2005. Some flexibility in deadlines may be allowed under exceptional circumstances.
2. All nominations should be sent to:
calic0cat <calic0cat@fastmail.fm> with "GW Contest Nomination" as the subject line. You will receive a confirmation note within seven days. If you don't, please re-send your nomination.
3. You may nominate up to ten stories. You may only nominate a story once but you may nominate more than one story by the same author. Authors may not nominate their own stories.
4. You must include a working URL for the story *and* a working contact address for the author in your nomination e-mail. I will contact the author to verify participation if and when a story reaches eligible status.
5. Two independent nominations are required in order to qualify a story for the contest.
6. Three types of "pairings" will be accepted:
1x2x1 - stories must end with Heero and Duo alive, in love, and in an exclusive relationship with one another. While other previous relationships may exist early in the story, the focus should be on Heero and Duo's relationship with one another and their relationship should receive equal or greater story time than all other previous relationships combined.
1x2x5 - stories must end with Heero, Duo, and Wufei alive, in love, and in an exclusive relationship with one another (note that it must be a true 1x2x5, not two of them "sharing" the third). While other previous relationships may exist early in the story, the focus should be on Heero, Duo, and Wufei's relationship with one another and their relationship should receive equal or greater story time than all other previous relationships combined.
No pairing - stories must end with Heero and Duo alive and best friends. They may not be in relationships with anyone else and the possibility of a relationship between them must not be explicitly or implicitly denied.
7. Nominations are restricted to multi-part stories that have been stalled (i.e. no new parts have been posted) for a minimum of six months at the time of nomination.
8. Only Gundam Wing stories are eligible for nomination. Nominated stories must have a clear, well-developed plot. Characters must be sufficiently in-character to be clearly recognizable. Crossovers, fusions, and AUs are eligible. Extremely, excessively, unrelentingly dark fics are not eligible. Fics with hopeless endings (ex. Heero and Duo alive and in love with one another BUT imprisoned or in danger of death/imprisonment/other unhappy future) are not eligible. Heero or Duo deathfics are not eligible but other characters are fair game. PWPs are not eligible. Extreme kink (such as hardcore BDSM) is not eligible. Citrus is allowed but not required.
9. Spelling and grammar count. U.K., Canadian, U.S., and Australian spelling are all equally acceptable. Stories with excessive errors will be disqualified. If this is the only problem with a story, the author will be given a chance to correct the problem prior to being disqualified.
10. Depending on the number of stories nominated, they may have to be approved (for quality of plot, character development, readability (grammar, spelling, etc.)) by a panel of volunteers.
11. As the contest sponsor, final approval of nominations rests with me. It is then up to the author to agree or refuse to participate.
12. Stories *must* meet the eligibility requirements to receive prizes; being accepted for the contest is not sufficient. In other words, if a story is accepted but the author changes to an ineligible pairing, kills off Heero or Duo, or otherwise violates the eligibility requirements, the story is no longer eligible and will not receive a prize.
Prizes
All accepted stories will be archived at my website as long as they remain eligible for the contest.
All accepted stories showing reasonable progress will receive one piece of commissioned fanart for the story in December 2004.
All completed stories that meet the eligibility requirements will receive one additional piece of commissioned fanart following completion. In the case of authors who have left the GW fandom, the author will be given alternative rewards to choose from (such as commissioned fanart for another fandom if feasible or a doujinshi or zine of approximately equivalent value).
Stories completed prior to the deadline will receive their prizes following completion rather than having to wait until the deadline.
Depending on the number, length, and quality of stories involved, additional prizes may or may not be awarded.
FAQs/Clarifications
1. Question: "Can't you make an exception and let me nominate this great 1x3 (or 2x5 or 1x2x3 or...)?"
Answer: No. If you like those pairings, sponsor your own contest. Authors have the right to write about whatever pairings they like and you have the right to read those stories however I have no reason to spend my money encouraging that.
2. Question: "Can I nominate a story if the author has left the fandom?"
Answer: If you can provide a working e-mail address for the author, yes. That doesn't guarantee that the story will receive enough nominations or that the author will participate, obviously, but there are special provisions for rewarding an author in that situation. Maybe that will be sufficient motivation.
3. Question: "What if a story that I want to nominate is no longer available online?"
Answer: Send in the nomination after contacting the author and getting him/her to e-mail the story to me. If it's eligible and accepted for the contest, it will be hosted at my site.
4. Question: "Are other background pairings (3x4, 5xR, 3x5, etc.) allowed?"
Answer: Yes, background pairings involving other GW couples are allowed. In fact, if the author considers the 1x2 (or 1x2x5) to be a background pairing and another pairing (such as 3x4) to be the main pairing, the story would still be eligible as long as the 1x2 or 1x2x5 relationship gets approximately equal story time.
5. Question: "What happens if I complete the story before December 2004?"
Answer: If your story meets all of the eligibility requirements then your prizes (you will still receive both the interim fanart and the completion prize) will be awarded as soon as possible (i.e. you will not have to wait till December for the first one or until after the March 31, 2005 completion deadline for the second one). This also applies if a story is completed after December 2004 but prior to the March 31, 2005 deadline. Prizes are awarded following completion rather than according to the deadline.
6. Question: "If I haven't made much progress by December 2004 but I still want to try to finish the story by the contest deadline, am I still eligible?"
Answer: If your story still meets all of the other eligibility requirements then yes, you are still eligible. You will not receive the interim fanart commission in December since you don't meet the requirement for it but if you do manage to finish by the March 31, 2005 deadline then you will receive both the final prize and the interim (December) prize at that point.
7. Question: "If I miss the March 31, 2005 completion deadline but I'm still working on the story, what happens?"
Answer: If your story still meets all of the other eligibility requirements and you're making progress on the story at a reasonable speed, I may be willing to negotiate an extension of the deadline.
8. Question: "What if I don't finish the story?"
Answer: You don't get the prize, obviously.
9. Question: "Are stories currently hosted at http://calic0cat.freeservers.com eligible for nomination?"
Answer: Yes, guest fics hosted at my site are eligible.

Date: 2004-08-04 08:50 am (UTC)People mighht be tempted to go that way just to finish up the story, '...and then they were all run over by a truck.'
Ack! Hadn't even considered that when I was making up the rules but that's just one more good reason for the no-deathfic rule! The main one, of course, is that I'm not about to spend money encouraging the completion of fics that I won't read - therefore the pairing, deathfic, extreme kink, etc. restrictions. I think a contest sponsor is entitled to a *little* bit of selfishness in the whole thing... *shrugs*

Date: 2004-08-04 04:14 am (UTC)I'm already getting a couple of ideas for stories I've been stalking. ^____^
You know what suddenly occurs to me? How to tell if it's actually been six months since some of these updates. Not everybody dates stuff...

Date: 2004-08-04 09:01 am (UTC)*snicker* Uh, yeah, obviously. After all, hurt/comfort makes such a great catalyst for the guys getting together... *grin* Actually, even permanent injury/disability is okay as long as it doesn't mean a hopeless ending (such as one of the guys ending up in a vegetative state or with the mental capacity of a five year old or something equally horrific).
I'm already getting a couple of ideas for stories I've been stalking.
Oh good! Probably I'll end up listing stories once they've got one nomination in order to encourage more folks to go out, read, then bug the authors... *grin* Should help in getting a second nomination too...
How to tell if it's actually been six months since some of these updates.
Sites like Mediaminer and Fanfiction.net automatically show the updated date and most archives have a "what's new" page that goes back at least a couple of months. And list postings will automatically have the posting date. Beyond that though, you're right. I guess the author would have to be asked. But unless there's really a ton of fics nominated, the *exact* number of months probably won't be too big an issue as long as the story's been stalled for more than just a month or two.

hmmmm... is a self-injury fic allowed? If the ending could turn out to be happy at the moment?

Date: 2004-08-04 10:38 am (UTC)Assuming it fits the other criteria (pairing, clear and well-developed plot, etc), it would be eligible for nomination. If it gets two nominations, then I would contact the author and the author would have to confirm that it will meet the eligibility requirements when it's finished. A "perfectly happy" ending isn't required but it should be a positive, hopeful one.
