Basically, my understanding is that the winner gets an exclusive on the reading/posting rights for that fic for that period of time. Meaning that he or she can choose to post it to a website or mailing list (obviously still properly crediting the author!) or to just read it and post messages gloating over having an advance peek at it or whatever the winner may prefer. That may or may not be of interest to you. But there are other benefits...

In the case of my auction stories (and those of other authors as specified), the auction item itself allows for the winner to have some input into the fic. For example, one of my auction stories allows the winner to request a sequel to one of my existing stories (and yes, that includes "Winning Duo"). Obviously there are certain things that are non-negotiable (a sequel to my Cost of Honour trilogy would have to be 1x2x1, for example) but the winner can negotiate other elements of the story. Completely new stories are somewhat more flexible, for obvious reasons.
