I have no clue where this came from. *eyes drabble* Ah well, at this point, I'll take whatever the muse has to offer. No matter how totally random it may be...

The first time that it happened, a mother’s instincts rose to the fore and she confronted him boldly.

She and her son bore matching bruises for three days.

The second time that it happened, she delicately and politely reminded her husband that she’d been born into a family just as Dark as his own.

She and her son twitched from the aftereffects of Cruciatus for three hours and bore matching bruises for three weeks.

The third time that it happened, she couched her reminder in no uncertain terms.

She and her son writhed under Cruciatus for three seconds, bore matching bruises for three minutes (healing potions were wonderful things), and were the perfect picture of Pureblood mourning at the funeral three days later.

The protective ferocity of a Hungarian Horntail defending her nest could not compare to that of Narcissa Black Malfoy protecting her little Dragon.

*blinks in bemusement* Like I said, totally random... (and quite possibly the shortest thing I've ever written...)

Go Narcissa.

Yup. *grins* Lucius learned the same lesson that Voldemort did before him - the female - or, to be more accurate, the mother defending her young - is truly the most dangerous of any species.

It strikes me as odd that in most cases where a story actually has Narcissa as the "good parent" to Lucius's "evil/abusive parent", she's a totally helpless pushover who sits in the corner metaphorically wringing her hands until (a) Lucius does Something Terrible to Draco and she takes an AK to buy Draco time to escape or (b) Lucius gets sent to Azkaban and she takes the opportunity to throw herself (and Draco) on Dumbledore's mercy and beg for protection (after which she often gets killed anyway).

Come on, folks, she's a Black. Heck, she's Bellatrix's sister, for goodness sake! Surely she can handle herself well enough to deal with Lucius! And there's definitely canon evidence that she dotes on Draco, so it's not hard to believe that she'd be positively vicious in his defense.

That's not to say that there aren't some great stories that follow those general characterizations and plotlines - it just seems like there aren't enough that "redeem" Narcissa's character without turning her into a damsel-in-distress.

Not only that, but as arrogant and bitchy as he is, I can't see him putting up with being married to someone useless and powerless. After all, being married to a weakling would weaken his family line.
