Taking off tomorrow for a few days away from home. Not going to be a writing trip, unfortunately, since I'm going with the folks and they already complain about how much time I spend on the computer (they've been reading too many news stories about Internet addiction, I think :P ), but I plan on taking my new eBookwise loaded with fic along for the drive and the evenings at the motel. I bought and downloaded a few 'normal' ebooks (sci fi and fantasy) for 'cover' in case anyone gets curious about the device itself and wants to take a look at it (family can be too darn nosy sometimes).

If anybody has a suggestion or three to make regarding good, long, complete slash/yaoi fic that I can grab in HTML, TXT, Rocket eBook (.rb), DOC, or RTF format (I've got the software to translate those into the appropriate files for my eBookwise, though I've yet to attempt a DOC or RTF conversion) in any of the fandoms and pairings that I like, post away. Gen fic that has my fav couples as friends/allies and not paired with anyone else is okay, too. Happy/hopeful endings for the guys are a definite requirement. Being able to download the whole fic as a single file is a bonus.

I'm mainly looking for recs of stories that I might not have run across previously and it's probably going to be tough to find anything that's new-to-me in GW fandom, possibly in TS, SG-1, and BtVS as well. However, hope springs eternal, so...

Fic recs requested for the following fandoms and pairings:

Gundam Wing (1x2x1 or 1x2x5 only)
The Sentinel (Jim/Blair only)
Ranma 1/2 (Ranma/Ryoga or Ranma/Ryoga/Mousse only)
Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Spike/Xander only)
Harry Potter (Harry/Draco only)
X-Men (Logan/Remy -> Wolverine/Gambit only)
Stargate SG-1 (Jack/Daniel only)

*crosses fingers*

Have you read any of the long stories in my latest contest at Rapture? There are some good stories in there. ^_^

Actually... *blinks* I completely forgot about your latest contest after I finally gave in and acknowledged that there was no way on earth that I was going to get something ready for it. Doh! I guess you must have posted the notice that the stories were up during one of those times that I wasn't online for a few days, then I ended up missing it when I skimmed through trying to get caught up. Guess I'd better take a look at those for sure.

About file conversions.

I am just wondering what file format can you transfer HTML files for and what software are you using for that?

The software that I'm using is eBookwise Librarian. It converts HTML (and other supported filetypes) to IMP files (the format for the eBookwise-1150 and other rebranded ETI-2 devices such as the Gemstar GB1150 and Rocket REB1100). The biggest drawbacks to the software are that it doesn't support conversion of PDF (Adobe Acrobat), LIT (Microsoft Reader), or PRC (Mobipocket) files, and it requires Word to be installed on the computer in order to convert DOC & RTF files.

For pretty much everything not directly supported by Librarian, the simplest solution is to convert the format to HTML, then let Librarian convert the HTML to IMP. I've looked at a few alternatives for PDF, and it looks like the PDF converter from CoolUtils.com does a pretty decent job of transferring PDF to HTML. Apparently, ConvertLIT works well for Microsoft Reader format, and there's supposed to be something called Book Designer 4 that handles Mobipocket.

Have you read the Sentinel story Harmonic Convergence? It's by Blue Champagne, and it's Jim/Blair with Blair/Rafe, Jim/Rafe, Blair/Jim/Rafe, plus intimations of Blair+Henri. Excellent story. I'm at work and don't have the link handy, but can get it this evening if you're interested . . .

No, I haven't read it. I've seen it recced a few times, but the threesome thing turned me off. I'd find it very, very difficult to buy into a third person in a Jim/Blair relationship. I've never been convinced by any that I've stumbled across and tried reading in the past, including a couple of other J/B/R and a few J/B/S. The ones with Simon didn't even persuade me and I generally find Simon a far more interesting character than Rafe. *whispers* I'm embarrassed to admit that I'd probably spend the whole story hoping for Rafe to lose interest or get killed off. No matter how great the story itself is. *shrugs* Just a little idiosyncracy, I guess. Some fandoms I can tolerate the occasional threesome in, some I can't. TS seems to be one of the "can't" fandoms.

Well . . .

You might want to try this one. The idea here is that Blair and Jim are so solid that absolutely nothing can come between them.

Rafe's a nice guy here, and there's a lot of other interesting stuff going on too. But hey, I certainly understand if you don't want to risk it.

There are a couple of HP stories you might like if you haven't read 'em, but again, don't have the links with me and even the titles aren't on the tip of my mind. Later.

Okay, the HP/DM stories: Transfigurations (http://trickster.org/res/transfig.html) by Resonant and Tissue of Silver by Fearless Diva (http://www.silververse.net). Oh, and Arsenic (http://www.mediageek.ca/arsenicjade/writ.html)'s Touch and Go. And if you don't try AJ Hall's Draco/Neville LoPiverse (http://www.lopiverse.shoesforindustry.net/) you'll be missing something really great.

You've read Dangermouse's Jack/Daniel (http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/dmouse/index.htm) stuff, right? The Coming Out universe and Mission Impossible?

Thanks for the reminder about Resonant's Transfigurations; I've run across it on a few rec lists in the past but I never quite got around to tackling it and Firefox ate my saved session that had a whole slew of fics open and waiting for me to gradually work my way through reading them. :P And, of course, I have no idea exactly which fics I'd had set aside in it, at least not until I come across a rec for one again and it reminds me. :( I have a feeling that Tissue of Silver was also one of the ones in that lost Firefox session.

Dangermouse's stuff - yep, I've read it. Lots of great stories there. Nothing new in a long time, though, unfortunately.

Cover stories

If you find you need new 'cover' stories for later journeys, try the Baen free library, they have novellettes that can be downloaded in most of the formats you can use and best of all, they're free.
There's a reasonably good spread of authors too, from Bujold and Lackey to Niven and Pournelle. With any luck there might be something you could use.
the library can be found at:

enjoy your trip.

I'd forgotten about the Baen freebies. Thanks for the reminder! That's one publishing company that actually has a clue about the Internet and how to do good PR with their target audience. Too bad more of them don't grow a clue. :P

I was thinking about getting the ebookwise because I still have the granddaddy of them all- the Nuvomedia Rocket ebook and hundreds of .rb files that will be useless when it dies. How does the ebookwise handle the .rb files? I've found postings where people say they've had some trouble getting them to work. I just wish the ebook industry would adopt the open book format instead of all of these proprietary and mutually exclusive formats.

As for fanfiction, I've enjoyed Sunhawk's "Psycho Trowa" contest on her live journal.

Have you read any of Jei's work (http://www.cs.hmc.edu/~jchew/misc/gw.html)? She has a lot of 1x2x1 fics (plus a couple of looong~ arcs) that are just absloutely fantastic. Should be plenty to keep you occupied ^^

I've read some of her stories but, taking a quick look at that page, there's an awful lot of them that I don't recall reading. Guess I need to slot them in on the reading list. Thanks!

Book Designer 4

From: (Anonymous)
I want to thank you for mentioning book converters in your live journal. As I mentioned above, I have the old nuvomedia rocket reader and had found no way to convert .rb files- until now. I found Book Designer 4 at this link: http://myprogs.net/x_men/book and downloaded it. Even in the short time I've had to play with it, it's been great and it's free! It converts all sorts of files including .rb to just about any format you want. The only downside is it won't convert .pdf or secure files but I don't have a lot of those anyway so it's not a big disappointment. Since just about every provider wants to use their own format, the best I can hope for is a reader that will accept multiple platforms. The iLiad e-ink reader looks promising but I'll stay far away from the Sony product. If you're really into ebooks, then http://www.teleread.org/blog is a good place to keep up with the latest.

I'm glad that it helped you out! It really is a pain that the ebook industry (publishers and hardware manufacturers both) seem to be so darn stuck on proprietary formats. :( The iLiad does look interesting, but the price... *goggles* Yikes. Just a wee bit out of my "sweet spot" for this particular variety of technology.
