That TS story meme...
Nov. 20th, 2005 07:06 pmI saw this when
fluterbev first posted it, and intended to do it after I took a little time to think about it.
And then promptly forgot.
Now that
ainm has posted it over in
ts_fresh_air, I've been reminded again.
When you see this, copy it into your own journal. Look through the list of stories and bold the ones you've read (and if you want to, aim to give the ones you haven't read a try when you can). Then, at the bottom of the list, add a story (or more than one) that you really love. Say whether it is slash or gen, write a short summary, and provide a link.
1. Visiting Alex, by Lady Ra (slash) - Wonderfully angsty, post Sentinel Too story. http://www.squidge.org/archive/arch
2. Equilibrium, by Lamardeuse (slash) - Post TSbyBS. A novel-length, plotty case story. Really excellent. http://lamardeuse.dreamhost.com/ts/equi
3. Laws of Murphy, by T.W. Lewis (AKA gardendoor) (slash) - Extraordinarily funny and sexy at the same time *g*. http://www.geocities.com/gardendoor/szo
4. Thirteen Christmas Traditions by Resonant8 (slash) - to get us in the holiday mood. Res is the main reason I jumped from DS to Harry Potter to TS and now to SGA - she is one of those authors you'll follow anywhere.

5. Conforming To Requirements by Fluterbev (slash) - I know everyone's probably read this already, but I had to put it on the list. This is my favourite of Bev's slash and gen fics, and that's really saying something. She's created an amazingly original universe here that holds together and makes sense, and the exquisite blend of angst, suspense and romance will have you on the edge of your seat until the last moment. It's an astonishing achievement, and definitely worthy of recognition. (Go! Vote for her! Now! *g*)

6. So What are you Saying by Karen (gentle slash) - This started life as a gen story on a fiction mailing list called SentinelAngst. This is the expanded, slash version (by gentle I mean non-explicit, BTW). It is humor, and it is a riot. It has a police psychologist evaluating the Major Crimes team, and Jim and Simon bring in Blair to counter the guy. I reread it anytime I need to laugh, because it never fails to bring a smile to my face. It can be found over at the 852 archive - http://www.squidge.org/archive/arch
7. Cheap by Francesca (Cesperanza) (slash) - as with number 5 above, I am sure everyone has already read this one, but I could not not put something by Cesperanza on the list, and this is one of my favorite stories by her. It is an angsty first time story. She was the first TS author that I deliberately went out and read EVERYTHING I could find that she wrote, and this short piece is one of the ones that just stuck in my head. I love all her stuff, but this one just hits me; I can't really say why. It can be found here: http://www.trickster.org/francesca/Chea
8. Long Day's Journey Into Night by kassrachel (slash) - Another classic author - I love all her stuff, even the ones she doesn't seem proud of anymore, but I love how in such a short story she manages to achieve both a first-time story and a really hot story. :-) http://www.squidge.org/archive/arch
9. Finding Home by sori1773 (slash) - Now for a new one, even though I'm sure you've all read it... there are so many good things out there right now that it's hard to pick just one, but this one really struck me because the approach was very fresh. People who say that post-TSbyBS has been fully explored are nuts mistaken. :-) http://www.squidge.org/archive/arch
10. FDJB by Dolimir (slash) - It hits one of my - numerous, okay - kinks, ie Jim/Blair through the eyes of a third party. And I like the little confrontation between Jim and Blair. Sparkles fly with those two. In particular when they're arguing. Also? It's hot. http://www.squidge.org/archive/arch
11. Into the Summer Sea by audrarose (slash) I'll steal Ainm's line and adapt it for that fic: people who say that post-S2P2 has been fully explored are nuts mistaken and Audra showed them all the errors of their ways. It's the first part of a complex and compelling series which deals with the mystical and paranormal in a wonderful way. It's haunting in places, I just love it. I rec it each time someone wants to read TS, and this little meme is no exception. Audra doesn't just tell stories like the rest of us - read her fics and you'll see what I mean. http://www.squidge.org/archive/arch
12. Heat by Legion (slash) Because it's HOT! It's also voyeurism and er, that might be yet another of my kinks? Yeah. I love Legion because - among other things - she writes great kink. http://www.squidge.org/archive/arch
13. Dancing in the Dark by maaaaa (slash) I can't resist, I love her fics. This one is scorching hot and if you're into spanking stories... well, you should check it out because oh boy it's good. It might also fry your brain - just a friendly warning :-) http://www.squidge.org/archive/arch
14. Nightmare Realized by Saul (slash) So actually, there're two versions of that series, ie gen and slash. I already loved it when it was gen, so it's not my slash bias talking. It's long and meaty and Jim and Blair are so very brilliant in that one. It also deals with a theme I'm always curious about, namely "Jim and Blair get kidnapped by the military". Saul wrote one hell of a good and interesting take at that particular storyline. http://saulsfic.kol.co.nz/slash/index.h
15. The Dragon by Mairead Triste and Aristide (slash)- technically all the same author, but that's how it's credited. Jim is targeted by a succubus type monster and it's up to Blair to save him. Dark and scary and exceedingly hot. What more could you ask?
http://www.squidge.org/archive/arch
16. The Fire by Francesca. (slash) This should push all my squick buttons - a twenty year old Jim and a ten year old Blair 'encounter' each other in a very strange situation - as the author puts it, if she was going to write underage J & B there had to be "turbans, fire, camels, people gibbering in Arabic, Naomi's gauzy dress catching fire, maybe trumpets. Faces smeared with dirt. A brass band. Muffins." What we end up with is a study of both Jim's character and the inevitability of the Sentinel/Guide bond
http://www.trickster.org/francesca/f
17. Woods Forsaken by Josephine Darcy. (slash) It's a werewolf/not a werewolf story, atmospheric and well put together. This rec Jim gets to play rescuer - or is he?
http://www.squidge.org/archive/arch
18. Epiphany in a Stairwell by Lady Ra (slash)(short) - Eavesdropping on Blair dealing with a bigot. *heee* http://www.squidge.org/archive/arch
19. Saving The Day by Karen (slash)(long) - Blair, Rhonda, and the Donut Girl have to free the precinct from terrorist invaders. Stuck in a locked basement, Major Crimes listens to Radio Free Blair on the Ellison channel. http://www.squidge.org/archive/arch
20. Nuance, by Livia and Resonant (slash)(very long) - Interpreting sensory observations comes terribly close to mind-reading. Jim has to think about this. (Watch for Scott, whose babies I will be having as soon as I track him down.) http://www.squidge.org/archive/arch
21. Cloudbusting by mab_browne (slash) - A rich, well-developed "what if They know" follow-up to TSbyBS. This, along with its sequels Crossing the Line and Coastal Shelf is my all-time favorite way to see the boys ride off into the sunset together. All three stories are at 852 Prospect. http://www.squidge.org/archive/arch
22. How Come My Dog Won't Bark When You're Around, by Delilah (gen). Blair has puppy-love, Jim has Blessed Protector overkill, the reader has the giggles... Find it here.
23. Jujubes and the Art of Male Bonding, by Red Soprano (gen) - small, quirky slice of friendship set just after Blind Man's Bluff. This is how men emote, people... sorta... It's here.
24. Rosie, by Kit Mason (slash, fairly long) - slow, rich and bittersweet post TSbBS, where they're making their way together bit by catch-in-the-throat bit...It's here.
25. Listening, by Spyke (slash) ...and sometimes you have no idea why a story does it for you, it just does. And it's here.
and my additions...
26. Scorpions, by Lady Ra (slash, long) - a wonderful, wonderful post-TSbyBS crossover with Stargate SG-1. Jim/Blair, eventual Jim/Blair, Jack/Daniel, and eventual Jack/Daniel. *grin* Ah, the joys of dimension-hopping. Read it here.
27. Alpha, by The Amazing Maurice (gen - though it can be read as having slashy hints, short) - an alternative take on the fountain scene in SenToo, with a very special guest star - Death. Crossover. Read it here.
28. Imperfections Series, by Dasha (gen, long) - a thoroughly enjoyable take on the "what if Sentinels and Guides were known" scenario. Blair's flunking out of the guide program - but he's the perfect guide for Jim. Lots of crossovers, all handled beautifully. You can find it here, on her author page at the Cascade Library. If only she'd do a slash version...
29. Ordinary Magic, by Dasha (gen, long) - another long series with lots of interesting things going on. Canon-based this time, but with some fairly major background twists. Jim learning how to spin his chakras yet still being very much Jim. Another great story that I just can't help wishing for a slash version of. Also available at her author page at the CL.
30. Lessons Learned: a story in three parts, by The Amazing Maurice (mild slash) - post-TSbyBS. Blair has a bad date, gets drunk, and has an epiphany. Jim deals with the mess and calls him a dumbass. *grin* Blair's "voice" is so very, very Blair - albeit a very, very drunken Blair - and Jim's "voice" is spot-on as well. Read it here.
Oddly enough, considering that I almost exclusively read slash, I ended up picking three gen and two slash stories. Maybe it's easier to pick a few recs from gen stories because I don't have as many favourites to choose from...
