...of stem-cell research.
From the article:
'It is possible that we could use this technology to make eggs from stem cells created from a man's skin cells,' said Moore. 'Thus technology could help gay men have babies, though obviously a fertilised egg created this way would have to be carried to term by a woman. It would have the genetic make-up of its two male "parents".'
Of course, the article then goes on to add that, of course, that is not the true purpose of the research - it's supposed to help infertile "traditional" couples. And the possible alternative usage is raising red flags with certain segments of society.
But all of a sudden, those "two guys have a kid who shares the DNA of both, just like the child of a het couple" slash and yaoi stories have become infinitely more plausible... Like as in, possible within the next two to four years, according to one scientist, while another is making a more conservative five to ten year estimate.

Date: 2005-11-14 12:42 pm (UTC)It's amazing what they can do with science these days. Sometimes you wish you could tell certain segments of society what they can do with themselves!

Oh yeah... If they spent half as much time worrying about their own lives as they spend worrying about everyone else's, and if they spent the remainder of the time actually thinking for themselves instead of blithely accepting someone else's "gospel truth" as irrefutable fact, then maybe they'd actually have something worthwhile to contribute to society. :P

I've really been trying to resist any and all plot bunnies unless and until I get stuck on everything else that I'm working on. I have stories that I started two or three years ago still languishing on my hard drive in an incomplete state - and I'm not just talking about a few that have been posted in part, like Kindergarten Heero. :P
