Well, "Life with Heero" #102 won the "post it next" vote by a landslide (29 votes while the other two options only got one vote each). So, this week's fic posting is:

Disclaimer: Duo and Heero and the rest of the GW gang aren't mine. This story is. Nuff said.

Author's Notes: This is an open-ended arc focussing on Duo and Heero's lives together, starting about two years after Endless Waltz. The length of each story in the arc will vary, anywhere from ficlet to multi-part. Warnings, rating, genre, and POV will vary from story to story as well. The arc as a whole will probably never truly "end", but the smaller plot arcs within it will.

An annoying buzzing sound intruded on Duo's rest. With a muttered curse, he rolled over, reached out, and slapped the alarm's snooze button without even opening his eyes.

Behind him, Heero mumbled sleepily, "Five more minutes isn't going to help."

Duo huffed out a weary sigh. "I know." Five minutes of dozing wasn't even a drop in the bucket after five consecutive sixteen-plus hour workdays.

The mattress creaked and shifted, and Duo expected to hear the thwack of bare feet hitting the floor. Instead, a warm body pressed against his back, an arm wrapped around his waist, and a chin tucked itself into the crook of his neck. Heero didn't say anything; he just sighed quietly, his breath tickling Duo's neck. Duo didn't say anything either, just intertwined his fingers with Heero's and tried to relax, keeping one eye on the clock the entire time. Nice as it felt to just lie here and simply *be* for a while, he'd really prefer to get moving before that damn obnoxious alarm went off again.

'At least today's only going to be an eight-hour day,' he thought with weary gratitude. 'Of course, we'll probably be so tired when we come home that we'll end up sleeping instead of actually *doing* anything, but then, right now, just spending the whole day lying here together and resting sounds pretty damn good...'

Just before the alarm went off, Duo reached over and hit the snooze button one more time. Heero didn't comment, but the arm wrapped around Duo tightened, pulling their bodies a fraction more tightly together.

For a few minutes, they simply lay there, soaking up the early morning peace and quiet and enjoying each other's company. Finally, Duo reluctantly murmured, "Hate to say it, but we've really gotta get up."

Lips brushed lightly against Duo's neck. "I know."

With a mutual weary groan of resignation, they separated and rolled out of bed.

It was going to be one damn long day.

***

'Two sheds down, four more to go...' Considering that it had taken four people about forty workhours each in order to get those two sheds cleared out and inventoried - not counting the additional labour by employees who'd sorted the discarded material and stored the inventoried goods - and considering that two of the remaining sheds were smaller...

That meant that they should have no problem finishing the inventory before the auditor's arrival. Assuming, of course, that they managed to maintain their current pace. Which was hopefully not too optimistic of an assumption.

Stifling a yawn, Duo awkwardly wiped the sweat off his face with the inside of one arm, careful not to get his dirty, gritty glove too close to his eyes. Abruptly, he realized that something about the nearly constant cacophony of creaks, rattles, and groans inside the shed seemed - different - and he froze in mid-wipe. "What the hell..." he muttered, casting a cautious gaze around the shed's interior. Everything *looked* okay, and the braces they'd placed along the walls were all in place...

But still, something seemed - off.

"Hey, Hil, hold still and be quiet a minute, will ya?" he called across the aisle. Hilde gave him a grumpy glare, but stopped sorting through a pile of assorted car engine parts and waited. Despite the silence, Duo couldn't hear anything that he could pinpoint as different from earlier. "Guess I'm just imaginin' things," he decided with a shrug. "Unless you hear something that sounds kind of funny too..." He gave Hilde a questioning look.

Raising an eyebrow, she said drily, "Other than the repeated odoriferous visits of that chili you had for lunch? Nope, not a thing."

Duo grimaced. "Ha, ha. Everybody's a comedian," he grumbled irritably. Yeah, the chili had been a definite mistake, but Hilde's comments had gotten old after the first dozen times. He gave an exasperated sigh, then insisted, "No, seriously Hil. Do you hear anything that just sounds kinda - *off*?'

She scowled at him, but stood silently and listened for a few moments. Finally, she shook her head. "No. Now, if you don't mind, some of us have better things to do than stand around listening to the colony spin." Suiting actions to words, she returned to her previous task.

Unable to shake the feeling that something was wrong, Duo made the rounds, checking the wall braces both inside the shed and outside as well. All of them were securely in place, and he could see no indications that the dilapidated building had shifted and become more unstable. Shaking his head, he chalked his uneasiness up to being overtired and went back to work.

Heero would be just about done unloading the last pallet load for Rick to inventory by now; he wanted to have another pallet filled up and ready to go by the time that Heero got back with the forklift. The sooner they got this damn inventory over with, the sooner they could get their personal lives back.

*anticipates lynch mob* And I really will try to have the next one ready in less time than this one took... Say, three months instead of four, maybe? *blinks innocently*

*pokes you* Be careful about those 'time' jokes... last time I made one, it ended up taking me six months to write the chapter. ^^;

Oh, the first part really captures the feeling of that sort of task. Exhausted, sick of it, ready to throw in the towel and say screw it... and that not being an option. I really feel for them.

And the second part. O.O Oh shit... it better not be four months! :P

Geesh, you're as bad as the co-worker who, in response to my "Hopefully, today goes better than yesterday", said, "Well, it can't be any worse!" Considering that yesterday was spent battling a network that kept going up and down (and operated at a crawl most of the time that it was up), only to have it finally start working properly at the very end of the day, I could've screamed at her taunting the power of "worse".

So - don't say things like that!

On the other hand... everyone now knows who to blame if the next chapter does take a long time to get written... *smirks and points at Sunhawk*

Oh, no you don't! I did not make the actual joke... I merely warned against the dangers! I am blameless! Blameless, I say!

Yay!

It's great to see another chapter, but I hope taht it isn't another 3 months, especially when there is the feeling of impending disaster!

Is it possible for me to want to cheer and cry at the same time? Because w00t, yay, ho-yeah! for another chapter; tears that it's so short and the time so long for another one. *glomps you* Please don't make it months!

And I super loved the beginning with them in bed holding each other and eyeing the alarm clock. SO realistic and sweet! *squees*

Much love and muse co-operation!

Glad you liked it! I will try to get another chapter done a little bit sooner, but I'm still so far behind in my writing that I'm making no guarantees.

Thanks! That scene seems to have been just as effective as I'd hoped, and that's always a good thing to discover!

Heero and Duo are never going to be able to do it, are they?

*sighs*

*laughs* Oh, they will someday. Eventually.

Of course, considering the way things have gone for them so far, the "big event" itself may come as somewhat of a letdown...

... I consider myself a patient person. I'm willing to wait. Unless, of course, you leave us with a sense of impending DOOM! ::poke:: Hurry, k?

*grin* Another one with the "sense of impending doom" thing, huh? I really don't know where you would get that notion from... *blinks and looks innocent*

I will try to get the next installment out in a more timely fashion. *crosses fingers*

*poke* It better not be three months, I want more cuddly scenes! *pout* I'll wait for the next one and exercise my patience, but now you have me wondering what sounded off to Duo.

*pokes* it damn well better be sooner than 4 monthes! the sense of impending doom cuts my patience at waiting into much smaller increments

*snickers* And here's yet another one with "the sense of impending doom"! I'll try to keep the muse going with LWH; maybe I can get another chapter ready a little sooner.

Of course, that doesn't guarantee that the next chapter will end in a less tense spot...

actually as long as you keep them coming I don't think we'll really mind the tense moments.

It's great love it. But no, don't wanna wait four month. What is Duo hearing? Where is Heero and what would you do with them? Can't wait for a new chapter. The beginning was so cute. Like it.

Glad you enjoyed it! Hopefully, the next chapter will answer at least some of your questions... Whenever I get it done, that is...

Three months! On a tense moment like that? *joins Sunhawk in the poking*

I`ve enjoyed this story from the beginning and it`s amazing to see how far they`ve come from the start of their relationship to the first section of this chapter.

What makes you folks think that the next chapter is going to be any better with regards to tense moments? *smirks*

it`s amazing to see how far they`ve come from the start of their relationship to the first section of this chapter.

It's taken them a long time to get this far, but they've built something very strong and very solid along the way.

I don't usually poke an author but in this case. *pokepokepoke* (but not too hard) Please don't take three months to write the next chapter, my nails are too short as it is.

*grins* I'll try to get the next one out a little more quickly. But I think the assumption that the next chapter won't induce further nail biting is perhaps a bit hasty...

I really loved the cuddling scene at the beginning. Was just too cute! ^__^
But now i'm stuck worrying about what Duo thinks is off. All these horrible scenarios are flying through my head.
*Joins in the author-poking* Please don't leave us waiting for the next part too long, or i'll start envisioning the colony exploding or something :o(
But otherwise, brilliant work as always

Thanks! I think everyone's had one of those mornings where they just laid there and stared at the alarm clock, dreading the thought of getting up and facing the day. Having someone to cuddle up with while doing so would make it even harder to crawl out of bed...

Please don't leave us waiting for the next part too long, or i'll start envisioning the colony exploding or something

Hmm, I don't think Duo left behind any hidden explosives back during the war... *shoos away distracting plot bunny*
