Sorry, folks, I'd hoped to have a few things ready by now, but I'd kind of forgotten just how darn busy life becomes when you bring home a new puppy. It's hard to concentrate on writing while one's feet are being attacked. Or while trying to watch out for squatting in inappropriate places (oh, the joys of housebreaking a puppy... *groan*). Too much peace and quiet tends not to be a good sign with a new puppy running around the place.

Unless, that is, she's taking a power-nap. Of course, then one has to be alert for that moment that she wakes up and is ready to be entertained again...

So anyway - I'm still writing, albeit very slowly, between my decidedly recalcitrant muse and a four-legged bundle of distraction. Just thought I'd sneak in a quick update from work during lunch...

Eh. What kind of dog is it? Man ::grins:: with all that fur sticking up she looks like an alarmed cat. XD

What a cuttie!

She's so cute! I wouldn't blame you for spending time away, if it means being with her. ^_^

Congrats on the new addition to your family! She's so cute!! Having a new puppy is a lot of work but it is worth it. I'm sure you'll have many fun years together. Please let us know what you decide to name her.

she's adorable! *Squee!* you're so lucky to be able to have pets. =D Even if they're a horror the first little bit, they're so worth it later on.

what's her name?

She's a Sheltie (Shetland Sheepdog). As for looking like a cat - she actually plays a lot like a cat. She uses her paws to strike out at things a lot, and she chases and pounces on her toys a lot like a cat. Her fur gets really wild when she's playing.

She is *really* cute. Also an incorrigible brat who does the innocent "who, me?" look very, very well. *snicker*

She's doing better with the housebreaking now that we've ditched the paper-training. We're teaching her to go outside instead; it's pretty cold but we've got a little coat for her and she seems to be okay with that.

Kelsie - which fits the general dog-naming rules-of-thumb (two-syllables since most commands (sit, stay, come, etc.) are one syllable, starts with an explosive sound (P, K, J, etc.) that carries well, and ends in an "e" sound which supposedly works exceptionally well in dog names).

She's very cute, and very, very *busy*. Much bolder and more active than my previous Sheltie was.

She'll be sound asleep, taking a power-nap, and I'll start to work on something, but she seems to sense every time the muse gets in gear. Then she'll wake up and distract me again. I was just getting things going again this evening and she woke up, walked up to me, and barked. I ended up on the floor playing with her, till she decided to grab my hair and pull it. When I took it away from her, she got a little rough, so she ended up with a little time-out to settle down. Of course, by then the muse had long since gone silent on me again... *sigh*

Thanks! This whole housebreaking deal would be a lot easier in the summer. But she's improving, slowly but surely. Thank goodness.

Hopefully Kelsie (the new puppy) will have a longer life than my last Sheltie did. I'm feeding a raw diet supplemented, at least for now, with an organic-type kibble. All the ingredients in her food are human-grade rather than the over-processed, high-in-grain, low-in-food-quality ingredients in most conventional commercial dog food. There's a growing body of evidence linking grain to a wide range of health problems in dogs (weight, joint, skin, digestive, etc.). Their digestive system just isn't designed for it.

I grew up on a farm, so I've always had pets. Being away at university really taught me to appreciate them, though. I really missed them then.

The puppy's name is Kelsie and she's a real livewire - into absolutely everything. A totally different personality from my previous Sheltie, no doubt about it.

She is! Especially when she passes out draped over my foot or leaning against my chest while I'm holding her.

Kelsie is a cute name! I also hope that she lives a long, healthy life. I read an article awhile ago about the by-products that are contained in pet food and I decided if I ever got another pet, I wouldn't feed them anything that contains by-products. I think Kelsie is off to a very good start!

Ahh, I grew up in apartment buildings where "no pets" was the ironclad rule. Mom used to joke about how me and my brother were allowed, why not a housecat?

Hopefully she'll settle down right? Usually they need a bit of time to get used to everything and explore. Especially puppies. =D I hope you enjoy her company for many years to come.
