This was one of those cases where the characters just grabbed the scene and ran with it, once I stopped trying to force it in the direction I'd originally intended.
They've both had enough of a dose of reality in their lives to give them that grounding. As for Duo's secrets - well, I know what I'd originally planned, but that plot bunny is looking far too innocent for me to trust it.
